Gardening with Rainwater

Now that the rain has let up a little bit and you’ve had a chance to walk around on your squishy ground and check out to see how the plants are doing, have you noticed that they seem happier? Plants love rainwater. Why? Because of the ideal pH, lack of “hard water” minerals, additives, and conditioners, and the presence of beneficial nutrients.

In rainwater the pH is typically more acidic, usually between 5 and 7, than that of your regular water. Along with being better for your plants, it’s also better for the soil. And it contains dissolved nitrogen which plants thrive on.

If you think you’ve been doing your eco-friendly best by using grey-water (which is water from a washing machine or your shower or a bathroom sink) you might want to re-think this. It can have a pH as high as 10.5 once it gets to the garden depending on the types of soaps and detergents that you used. Use rainwater to flush out your soil and keep the pH balance in check.

Okay. You get it. But it rained and you didn’t collect any rainwater, so now what? Lucky for you, the rain isn’t done with us yet. You still have time to get a rain barrel or two. Or three. Please take a look at our Rain Barrel options and we know you’ll find a style you like. We’ll even help you through the rebate process.

When we come out to talk to you about the barrels, we’ll be happy to take a look at your rain gutters to make sure they’re operating as they should. If we see a problem we’ll give you an estimate and fix you up on time and on your budget and with our guarantee. We won’t be undersold. No kidding.

And if the rainwater works as well on your plants as we expect it will, you might want to think about showing some of them at the Ventura County Fair this August. Imagine... rainwater sending you home with a blue ribbon!

Please give us a call at 805.267.6745 and speak to a real live person. We offer 24-hour emergency service in case you’ve been a little, um, lax in taking care of your gutters.

We will meet all of your gutter needs from Ojai to Ventura to Oxnard. We are happy to work with you in any way that we can. Just click here for a Free Estimate.

We look forward to hearing from you!

You can have piece of mind that you're helping the environment by conserving water and giving your garden the best water it can get, devoid of harsh chemicals and rich in nutrients.  And you can perform that conservation without sacrificing your home's outer appearance with the very stylish and functional Rain Wizard Urn.

With a deep welled top, you can plant an array of floral arrangements or even a small herb or vegetable garden. The top also includes the Good Ideas original, integrated overflow channel. This channel automatically diverts all overflow water to the front of the barrel and keeps your foundation from flooding. The large opening which can be used for 2x3 or 3x4 downspouts is covered with a soft, fine mesh, plastic screen. This screen keeps out heavy debris and insects for your piece of mind. Also included with the barrel are the two, offset spigot locations. Now you can use a 5 gallon bucket or hose simultaneously without issue. Or use the second spigot as an overflow into a second barrel. Who knew you could have so many features in a rain barrel? Impress your friends and neighbors with the Impressions 50 Gallon Bark Rain Saver.

When drought sets in and rain is short, rain barrels can provide that precious water you need for your lawn and garden.  The Rain Wizard 50 can provide 50 gallons of pure, unchlorinated water when municipalities declare periods of low water usage.  During heavy rain falls, a typical roof can produce hundreds of gallons of water.  By saving that water, you can reduce your average water usage by up to 40%.  With those kinds of savings, the Rain Wizard can pay for itself in just a few seasons.

The Rain Wizard features an attractive Faux oak barrel design so it naturally fits in with your landscape.  And the wide variety of colors allows you to even further match your barrel to your home and yard without standing out.  Its plastic screen mesh is newly designed to keep out bugs, animals, and debris while still being easy to remove for cleaning and maintenance and is gentle on skin.
A front side overflow keeps water from flooding against your outside wall.  The flat-back design is one of the most convenient features as it allows your barrel to sit right up against your home so you don't have to worry about purchasing excess downspout parts.

These barrels are tough.  While most barrels will crack or become brittle in the winter time, the Rain Wizard will stay strong.  It is still recommended that you drain your barrels when temperatures approach the freezing point.  And if you're looking for the best deal for the planet, be sure to get a Black Rain Wizard; these barrels are made of 100% recycled resin.

Don't forget, you can increase your storage and savings with the Rain Wizard connector kit.

Or boost your pressure and make room for buckets with the Rain Wizard Stand.

** We are offering these rain barrels along with several other styles and sizes. Just ask me and I'll help you find the Rain Barrel that will fit your needs!

Personal Note - My tomatoes thrive and love the un-chemically treated water!

Randy's Rain Gutters has the knowledge on Rain Barrels in SoCal!

What about rain barrels?

With many areas facing long term drought, a rain barrel may be just the thing for you. Unless you are old enough to remember rain barrels, you may think that they are the latest and greatest craze. In truth, rain barrels are nothing new. They were commonly used for hundreds of years in one form or another well into the 20th century and though not as common now, they have been making a comeback.

What is a rain barrel?

A rain barrel is simply a container that your rain gutters flow into, collecting the water from your roof's runoff. Rain barrels have allowed people to have water "on demand" during any dry seasons and/or a lack of indoor plumbing. In the old days it was wooden barrels or 55-gallon drums, nowadays they have containers specifically made for them.

Should I use a rain barrel?

Rain Barrels save on your water bill, conserve water and will hold up to 55 gallons each. As watering your lawn and garden can be up to 40% of your water use*, they can add up to quite a bit of savings. Plus you can use the water to wash your car and top off your swimming pool.

A rain barrel can save homeowners around 1300 gallons of water during peak summer months*. It also diverts water from storm drains and lessens the impact of runoff to streams. You can use them for watering your lawn and garden and for washing your car.

Where do I get rain barrels?

Randy’s Rain Gutters tries to save you money and with diligent research has found a discount program active in our area! Be Water Wise will reimburse you up to $75 per rain barrel with a limit of four per house. Randy will be happy to provide further information upon request. See SO-Cal Water Smart.
