Water Damage in Oxnard and Ventura Homes

Water seems so... harmless. We drink it and bathe with it and cook with it and swim in it. We feed it to our pets and our plants and gardens and do a million other things with it and most us never even think about it unless there’s either a drought or a deluge. After all, it’s just water. So it’s surprising to realize how much damage water can do. Yep, plain water, left unchecked can ruin your home down to the foundation.

At the top of almost every home maintenance list, is the need to clean out your gutters regularly. Why? Because once rain gutters become clogged they’re not doing their job anymore. The job of a rain gutter is to catch the rain as it falls from your roof and direct it away from the house. Water backup caused by clogged gutters can rot wood gutters and rust those made of sheet metal.

One of the most important things in preventative home maintenance is to keep moisture away from your house. If too much water falls it can seriously damage the siding, create pathways for water to enter your home, and it can cause your home’s foundation to crack. Additionally, your foundation could settle, and the water could crack basement walls. The cost to stabilize, repair, and seal deteriorated foundation walls can easily run from $15,000 to $40,000. Yes, really!

Once water gets into the foundation or walls of your home it can also cause harmful mold and mildew that you may not even see for years. If you’ve ever seen a home improvement television show you’ve undoubtedly seen some eager DIY-er or contractor re-doing a bathroom or basement and as the sledgehammer goes into a wall, the mold appears. It’s both dangerous to your health and the health of your home and can be costly to fix. And look out for termites which are drawn by water!

It’s widely recommended that you have your gutters professionally checked twice a year. We absolutely agree and would be happy to provide this service for you. View Water Run-off as Art

Almost everyone considers the sounds of water to be soothing and safe. People fall asleep at the beach to the sounds of the ocean, they install water fountains inside and outside of their homes, and they turn on their noise machines on the bedside table for that lulling sound of falling water. It calms and envelopes babies and seniors and everyone in between. We know of someone who turns on her dishwasher before she goes to sleep at night because she can hear the water whooshing!
When you’re tucked inside and it’s raining outside you might hear the water on the roof. Can you imagine how wonderful it would be if there were a sense of music to that sound? That’s precisely what a rain chain will add when the clouds open up and the water appears. You’ll hear a magical sound you might never have heard before.

Rain chains originated in Japan hundreds of years ago and are traditionally used as decorative downspouts on homes and temples. They are considered both functional and aesthetically pleasing. They came to wider notice after the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and have been gaining in popularity ever since with homeowners, garden designers and landscapers around the world.

Rain chains guide the rain water run-off from the roof and while it makes its way through the chains, it winds up either on the ground, hopefully using a water run-off management system, or can be deposited into a rain barrel, which will gather the unfiltered water for you to use in any way you like.

Rain chains, while highly functional, can be truly stunning works of art. They are typically made of copper which will, over time, develop a beautiful patina. They come in other materials, as well. The designs run from teacups to flowers to links and all manner of other lovely images. You definitely want to put one where visitors to your home will see it. And you can of course have more than one! You can View A Video of some rain chains here.
